The super antioxidant called ergothioneine or ErgoActive by ingredient supplier and manufacturer Blue California has achieved Generally Recognized as Safe (GRAS) status from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under its intended conditions of use.
ErgoActive is intended to help with age-related cognitive impairment.
"Achieving GRAS status makes ErgoActive a marketable and valuable source commercially," said Hadi Omrani, director of technical and regulatory affairs.
It is currently thought to be helpful in reducing oxidative stress. Ergothioneine is found in mushroom and studies have found a link between consumption of mushrooms, ergothioneine levels in the body and reduced incidences of age-related cognitive impairment.
A study conducted in Singapore called "The Association between Mushroom Consumption and Mild Cognitive Impairment: A Community-Based Cross-Sectional Study” published in the March 12 edition of the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease found that adults over 60 who consumed fewer mushrooms than the control group, who ate more mushrooms, were more likely to have mild cognitive impairment. Multiple other studies have found evidence to support the hypothesis that mushrooms and other ergothioneine rich foods can help to reduce neurodegeneration in older adults.
